Performance Management: A System to Help Increase Individual and Organizational Performance

Presenter: Susannah Chance, Spectrum Consulting

Location: Sheraton Hotel, Portsmouth

Program Details:

“Let’s get rid of performance evaluations! The managers hate writing them, and the employees find the process a waste of time.” The charge to abolish performance evaluations has been heard repeatedly over the last few years. HR’s response is often to push back and defend the process – “we need them for legal reasons, for fairness, to determine compensation, because we need the managers to give feedback at least once a year, etc.”.

The criticism from managers and employees should push HR professionals to reflect on their organization’s current performance management “process”. Is the evaluation form/meeting a part of an overall process that evaluates employee performance to goals? Is it motivating? Does the performance management process help the organization assess its strengths and weaknesses so that it can make strategic decisions? Does it help both drive performance of the individual and the company?

In this session we’ll discuss the performance management process and share ideas that may help attendees enhance their performance management systems. We’ll also reference “The Performance Appraisal Tool Kit” by Paul Falcone and Winston Tan, which is one of the books that may be read to receive SHRM recertification credits.

Learning Goals:

-Understand components of an effective performance management process
-Understand how performance management can assess and drive individual and organizational change and performance
-Understand that performance management systems must adapt to changing organizational needs
