Breaking the ‘Silicon Ceiling’

PORTSMOUTH — A gathering in the city earlier this week gave women the chance to talk about the challenges and opportunities of working and succeeding in what has been male-dominated technology fields.

From stories about dressing to look more male than female to fit in to sharing advice about how women by their nature can be more collaborative, the “Women In Technology” forum on Tuesday raised many topics during a panel discussion. It also gave about 80 registrants the opportunity to network with each other at the One Hundred Club on Market Street.

“It’s been estimated that on average there are over 2,000 open IT positions in New Hampshire, yet the percentage of women in IT compared to the percentage of men in IT is surprisingly low,” said Jennifer Gray, chief executive officer of Market Street Talent of Portsmouth, a lead organizer of the forum.

“Somewhere along the educational path, girls lose interest in STEM disciplines,” she added. “It’s our goal to keep open the lines of communication and empower the next generation of women technologists.”
