Tori’s Take: Achieving Your Summer Goals

Written by Market Street Talent | July 7, 2017

Each month, we bring you “Tori’s Take” featuring a guest post by Market Street Talent’s Operations Coordinator, Tori Leavitt, as she takes a look at popular workplace concepts and trends.

Summer is the perfect time to make a seasonal bucket list – warm weather, longer days, and sunshine inspire even the least goal-oriented among us. I bet there are a few things you’re hoping to accomplish before fall rolls back around! Sometimes the relaxed nature of the season makes it a little tougher to stay motivated, no matter how good your intentions. Need a few tips to help you stay on track? Read on…

Make a List
The first step towards accomplishing any goal is writing it down. Seeing what you want to get done on paper (or in a note in your phone) is an important visual cue. Try to keep your list manageable – it’s tempting to write down absolutely everything you hope to accomplish over the next eight weeks, but overloading your schedule is setting yourself up for failure. If you want to make a “master list,” break it into reasonable pieces so you can see your progress as the summer goes on.

Stay Accountable
Enlist a friend, coworker, or your calendar as your “goal buddy!” If you want to pitch a project to your boss, set an official meeting. If you want to improve your mile time, ask a friend to be your running partner. Making yourself accountable to another person will make you more likely to follow through than if you kept your plans to yourself.

Get Outside
When you’re sitting inside all day staring out the window at the sunshine, it can be tough to stay focused on the task at hand. Take advantage of any free time you have during the day and step outside! Whether you take a walk on your lunch break, fit in an early morning or evening run, or are lucky enough to be able to work outside for a while, the fresh air will help you feel renewed when you return to your project.

Managers: This One’s for You!
If you’re a manager or team leader, consider scheduling a company outing to spend the day outside, or even taking your team to lunch somewhere with outside seating for a summer celebration. Activities like this get everyone outside and break up the monotony of office life. A picnic table for employees to use during lunch is another great option if your company has outdoor space available on a daily basis. Summer is a great time to infuse some fun and team building into your workplace, and make sure everyone is refreshed heading into fall.
