Consistency is Key
When it comes to your resume, appearance matters. To appeal to hiring managers, there are a few formatting tips to keep in mind. First off, aim for neatness and uniformity throughout your resume. Adding elements like different fonts, “flashy” details, or even italics can take away from the content. Next, keep your resume concise. Try to keep your resume as condensed as possible, without losing information. Our recommendation is two pages maximum – depending on how far along you are in your career.
Use Strong Examples
Since we recommend keeping your resume concise, ensure that the content on your resume is offering strong examples of your work. For example, if you’ve been in a certain role for 10 years, you probably want to include more than just three bullet points. Additionally, it always looks great to the hiring manager if you tailor your resume to the specific role you’re applying for.
Perfect Your Summaries
For each role on your resume, make sure you include a job summary. When writing your summaries, it’s a good idea to use the job description that the company wrote for your role. However, add your personal spin to it! Summaries should be no longer than a few sentences. Any longer will likely be skipped over by a hiring manager. Finally, if you’ve had multiple roles that are similar, avoid using the exact same summary for each one.
Include Skills and Accomplishments
A skills and/or technology section on your resume is a MUST! Hiring managers and recruiters want to know the areas in which you excel. In addition to hard skills, list accomplishments or awards that you had while working at a company. But, our team recommends you focus mainly on highlighting high level goals.
