As we reflect on the changes that come with a new year and strive for greatness in both our personal and professional lives, many of us find ourselves re-evaluating our overall happiness. As someone who has been there, I can attest that it took months of lists of pros and cons and leaning on my support system to decide to change the course of my career in a direction I never considered. It was this time of year, though, that I finally took the leap. And you can, too!
As an Elementary School Teacher who received her master’s in the field, I wasn’t quite ready to let go of my dream for some other career that wasn’t even on my radar. However, reality hit when gas prices were high; I was commuting 30+ minutes each way and working at Target nights and weekends to scrape by. I found a community of other teachers leaving the field on social media, and many of them pointed to careers in the exciting, innovative, and ever-growing field of technology.
As I did my research, I found solace in the fact that there were so many areas of tech to explore; this field was necessary and sturdy, and I could still make a difference in the world by helping people. Whether I chose to recruit and help people find their next dream job (spoiler alert—this was my ultimate decision), write or test code for vital machines and applications in the veterinary technology space, manage projects for a company in waste management, or analyze data for an up-and-coming electric vehicle company, both of which are actively working to save the environment, my impact could be just as meaningful as I had hoped teaching the next generation would be. And by the way, all the careers I just mentioned are roles we see from our current clients regularly—we are pretty proud!
